William C. Zane

 The Pennsville Fire & Rescue Co. 1 suffered the tragic loss of Firefighter William C. Zane on August 12, 1979. Firefighter Zane was attempting to rescue an occupant of a motor vehicle accident and was overcome by fumes. Firefighter Zane left behind a wife and son.

A memorial dedicated to Firefighter Zane was placed within the Pennsville Fire & Rescue Co. 1 station, along with a plaque outside of the engine bays. Also the members of the Pennsville Fire & Rescue Co. 1 established a trust fund for the son of Firefighter Zane, which was turned over to the family in 1997.

A memorial service is held each year by Active and Life Members observing the efforts of Firefighter Zane, and his ultimate sacrifice while serving his community.
