On July 25, 2007 at 3:31 p.m. FAST 5 was dispatched to a working fire in Alloway.   Quint 5 arrived (after the NJSP moved their vehicle) with fire and smoke showing at a pizza/sub shop and hair salon, with apartments in the rear.  Pennsville’s crew stood by as FAST and assisted with accountability.  The fire was caused by children playing with matches.  Pennsville units were in service for two and a half hours.

On July 16, 2007 at 12:42 p.m., FAST 5 was dispatched to a building fire in Salem City.  While enroute, the call was upgraded to a 2nd alarm by Chief Ayares.  This added additonal units and changed our assignment from FAST to the second due truck company.  Quint 5 was ordered to report to the rear of the building (’C’ division).  Pennsville’s crew performed a search of the college,  placed ladders to the roofs of multiple taxpayers, and placed multiple handlines in service.  After an explosion collapsed part of the structure, Quint 5 went into defensive operations with it’s master stream.  The fire was caused by an electrical fault.  Pennsville units were on scene for about 5 hours.

On July 19, 2007, Applebee’s hosted a Dine to Donate event with Pennsville and Deepwater fire companies.  Those that came in to eat with flyers had 10% of their meals donated to the fire companies by Applebee’s.  Firefighters and fire trucks from both fire companies were on hand to meet the public.  One minor interruption occured when both fire companies were dispatched to an alarm system at Pennsville Towers.  A resident there had burned their dinner and discarded the burned food into a trash compactor.  According to Applebee’s, this was the most successful Dine to Donate on the east coast, and possibly in the entire country.  Thank you to Applebee’s, all those who came out to dine with the fire companies, and the firefighters who volunteered their time, as you so often do.

On June 9, 2007 at 6:05 a.m., Station 5, Ambulance 5, Engine 7, and Life Support 5 were dispatched to Ft. Mott Rd. for an MVC involving a motorcycle.  Upon Chief 5-10B arriving, the victim had already been located by police on the side of the road in thick vegetation.  It was later learned that the patient had probably been laying on the side of the road for at least several hours.   Ambulance 5 arrived and completed patient assessment at which time NJSP Southstar helicopter was requested.  Engine 7 was directed by command to set up a landing zone.  This call capped off a busy day for Station 5.  In the past 24 hours, Station 5 responded to 7 calls which included a working 5 story building fire, a double cardiac arrest, an MVC involving an emergency vehicle, and this call. Kent Ave. Building Fire

On June 8, 2007 at 10:36 a.m. Deputy Chief 5-10A was returning to New Jersey via the Del. Mem. Br. when he saw a column of smoke in the area of Kent Ave.  After arriving at a new 5 story retirement building under construction, it was apparent that a large roof fire was the cause of the smoke.  A fire ignited while hot tar was being poured on the new roof.  Chief 5-10A radioed his findings to Salem County Communications, to which they responded they were in the process of dispatching units after receiving several 911 calls.  Chief 5-10A directed Engine 7-1 to lay in from a hydrant on Kent Ave. and set up to supply Quint 5-6.  Due to the roof being constructed of concrete, damage was limited and it was reported that the fire would not delay the opening of the building.  Command was transferred to Deepwater Fire Co. as the fire was in their district.  Other units on scene included Ladder 6, Engine 11, FAST 12, Rescue 5, and Engine 7-2.
